BIO
Dr Sanjay Nimbalkar is an Associate Professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). He is a Fellow of Advance HE (FHEA), Chartered Professional Civil and Structural Engineer (CPEng), a Fellow of Engineers Australia (FIEAust), an APEC/IntPE(Aus) Engineer in the area of Civil Engineering and certified on the National Engineering Register (NER) of Australia. His research has primarily focused on the safety, stability, and sustainability of road pavements and railway tracks; the development of analytical, constitutive, and numerical models; as well as in-house and on-site field monitoring of transport infrastructure projects. His doctoral research work on the pseudo-dynamic method of analyses for earth-retaining structures is considered one of the most significant contributions to the field of soil dynamics and earthquake engineering.
He has more than two decades of experience in academics, research, training, and consultancy. He has been actively involved in geotechnical site investigation, full-scale in-situ track monitoring, and the design of rail infrastructure for both the civil and transportation industries. He has extensive experience in transportation geotechnics, including railway and road pavement substructures, geosynthetic applications, circular economy, constitutive modeling, and numerical simulation, and has published widely in these areas. He primarily focused on (i) laboratory examination of marginal geomaterials; (ii) constitutive framework to simulate artificial inclusions; (iii) novel analytical models for road and railroad analyses; and (iv) better design tools via user-friendly subroutines.
He has published a number of research papers in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, both at the national and international level. His scholarly articles are internationally recognised and highly cited. He is one of the top-ranked researchers, which is within the top 5% of researchers, in terms of the number of research outputs contributing to the subject area ‘Geotechnical Engineering and Engineering Geology’. He is regarded as an internationally leading researcher in transport geotechnics, as evidenced by highly cited publications, prestigious awards, invited lectures, and editorial board memberships for numerous peer-referred journals relevant to the field.
He is the recipient of the Institution of Civil Engineer’s (ICE) 2014 Thomas Telford Premium award in the area of ground improvement. He is honoured with the Second Professor Joseph M. Sussman Best Paper Prize awarded to the most outstanding paper published within Frontiers in Built Environment: Transportation and Transit Systems in 2019. This is an annual prize, introduced in 2018 to commemorate the legacy of the late Specialty Chief Editor of the section, Massachusetts Institute of Technology JR East Professor Joseph M. Sussman. He has also received the Editor's Choice Award for the best paper in the International Journal of Geosynthetics and Ground Engineering in 2020. He is the recipient of the Reviewer of the Year 2017 (non-EBM) and Best Reviewer of the Year 2022 (from EBM) awards for the Indian Geotechnical Journal, published jointly by IGS and Springer (India), and the 2023 Outstanding Associate Editor award from Frontiers in Built Environment (Switzerland), published by Frontiers Media S.A.
He is committed to bridging the gap between theory and practice, enhancing the students' academic experience while equipping them with vital critical thinking skills, allowing them to effectively apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios and become lifelong learners. He is proactive in further developing his pedagogic skills, for example, by completing the Graduate Certificate (GradCertHEd) in Higher Education Teaching and Learning (HETL) in 2021 as well as the Enhancing Teaching @ UTS Program in 2024. The teaching team led by A/Professor Sanjay Nimbalkar, alongside Dr Piyush Punetha and Dr Mohammad Adnan Farooq, won the 2024 UTS Teaching and Learning Citation in recognition of their outstanding contributions to nurturing future railway engineers through innovative, immersive, and industry-aligned learning experiences. He has also been awarded with 2026 Fellowship (FHEA) with the UTS Educational Fellowship Program and Advance HE {formally known as the Higher Education Academy based in the United Kingdom - a globally recognized professional body and the custodian of the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF)} in recognition of attainment against the Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education. This fellowship was awarded due to successful completion of an Advance HE accredited programme at the University of Technology Sydney. This Fellowship presents a strong account of highly relevant, industry-aligned and inclusive teaching practice that clearly demonstrates Sanjay's commitment to supporting a diverse cohort of engineering students via activity-centred, studio-based transport geotechnics subjects. Sanjay's teaching is informed by a robust scholarly foundation, drawing on learning theory, discipline-specific accreditation requirements, and sector-relevant frameworks such as the HESF, Engineers Australia, and ARA expectations. Sanjay incorporates the UTS Model of Learning, LD Quality Guidelines, and ethical GenAI practices into his design decisions. Sanjay's strong engagement with digital technologies also demonstrates his commitment to enhancing learning through well-chosen tools.
A/Prof Sanjay Nimbalkar supervises a cohort of HDR candidates, research associates, and visiting scholars, inspiring them to achieve excellence in their academic pursuits. Dr Piyush Punetha, the first PhD student supervised by A/Prof Nimbalkar at UTS, was awarded the 2023 PhD Thesis Award for his outstanding contribution to the field of transport geomechanics, with particular emphasis on the dynamic behaviour of ballasted railway track. Dr Punetha is the first candidate in the field of transport geomechanics from Australasia to receive this highly prestigious honour. Dr Naveen Kumar Meena was selected as one of the 50 chosen geotechnical engineers from Australia and New Zealand and was invited to deliver a presentation at the 15th YGPC held in 2024 at Adelaide. Dr Meena also secured the People's Choice Award for his poster presentation at the Young Geomechanical Professional's Night (YGPN) 2024, organised by the AGS Sydney NSW Chapter. Dr Mohammad Adnan Farooq was honoured with the UTS Staff Recognition Award for “Casual Educator of the Year (2024)". Dr Akshay Sakhare's PhD thesis has been distinguished as one of the best theses among all doctoral completions between 01 January 2024 and 01 January 2025, by the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and is placed on the Dean’s List. Each year, the Dean’s Lists acknowledge outstanding research achievements from doctoral candidates in the faculty.
Dr Mohammad Adnan Farooq garnered the 2025 PhD Thesis Award by the Railway Technical Society of Australasia (RTSA) for his outstanding doctoral research at UTS. Dr Adnan, the second nominee in the field of 'Transport Geotechnics,' received this prestigious award. The first recipient of this award was Dr Piyush Punetha, who is currently a research fellow in the ‘Smart Sustainable Transport Geotechnics (SSTG)’ group led by A/Prof Nimbalkar at UTS. This is a rare occasion for the SSTG group to celebrate two awards, one in 2023 and the other in 2025. Dr Piyush Punetha has received the 2026 UTS Chancellor's Research Fellowship to work on a 4-year research project titled 'Next Generation, Sustainable Infrastructure Protection System using Geo-Stabilised Recycled Waste' and A/Prof Nimbalkar is the nominated Sponsor. Dr Piyush Punetha also received the IACMAG Excellent Paper Award 2025 for the publication in the International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics: Piyush Punetha, Sanjay Nimbalkar, and Hadi Khabbaz (2020). “Simplified geotechnical rheological model for simulating viscoelasto-plastic response of ballasted railway substructure.” International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, 2021; 1–29. This award was given at the 17th International Conference of the International Association for Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics (IACMAG 2025), held at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, 18–21 December 2025. Dr Naveen Kumar Meena received the 2026 ISSMGE Foundation Grant to attend the 21st International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ICSMGE 2026) in Vienna, Austria. The ISSMGE Foundation Grant is a prestigious recognition that supports promising researchers and young professionals in geotechnical engineering by enabling their participation in one of the most renowned conferences in the field. A/Prof Nimbalkar's HDR students have also shown consistent top performance in research showcase events organised at school and faculty levels.
A/Prof Nimbalkar has also played an active role in a number of contract research, testing, and consultancy projects in Australia and beyond. He is also serving as a reviewer in a number of reputed national and international journals. He serves as a regular reviewer for over 80 journals, including all the top journals in the area of Civil – Geotechnical Engineering. In appreciation for his outstanding contribution to review, he has received various honours (outstanding contribution in reviewing, excellence in reviewing). He is a mentor for the Publons Academy, where he actively engages in training young researchers to critically evaluate scholarly research articles.
A/Prof Nimbalkar is an EMCR (Early- and Mid-Career Research) fellow of Australia–India Strategic Research Fund supported by Australian Academy of Science (2020-2022). He also worked in the ARC Center of Excellence for Geotechnical Sciences and Engineering, spearheaded by the University of Newcastle, the University of Western Australia, and the University of Wollongong, Australia (2011-2016). He has been actively engaged in the delivery of short courses on 'Geotechnical Aspects of Earthquake Engineering' and 'Railway Geotechnics' under the GIAN scheme of the Government of India as a foreign expert. He is a staunch proponent of global citizenship, advocating for the sharing of high-quality technical knowledge in the design, construction, and maintenance of sustainable railway tracks. He has successfully spearheaded several collaborative initiatives that have brought together scholars from Australia and abroad. He is also serving as an adjunct faculty member at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM), India (appointed in 2020), and a visiting associate professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB), India (appointed in 2022).
He is also a member of several professional societies, including the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), the Australasian Chapter of the International Geosynthetics Society (ACIGS), the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) and the Technical Societies of Engineers Australia (EA) such as (i) the Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS), (ii) Railway Technical Society of Australasia (RTSA), (iii) Australian Tunnelling Society (ATS), and (iv) Australian Earthquake Engineering Society (AEES).
A/Prof Nimbalkar is the nominated lead of the ‘Focus Group’ for North America to work on the action plans for the implementation of the recommendations from the FEIT International Research Engagement Strategy. Additionally, he serves as the International Academic Representative for the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and holds an active membership in the FEIT International Committee (2025-2026). He is also a nominated member of the UTS Educational Fellowship Program (UTS-EFP) Reviewer Community, commencing from 2026. He has been associated with management of the school RDC (Research Development Committee), TLC (Teaching and Learning Committee), and international initiatives aimed at expanding outreach beyond borders. He acted as the Postgraduate Civil program coordinator of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (2021-2024) and as a member of the FEIT Health and Safety Working Group (HSWG) at UTS (2019-2023). He also acted as a staff volunteer for the UTS HELPS Buddy program for assisting overseas students. He is a member of the UTS Chapter of Engineers Without Borders Australia (EWB).
