    The Australian Centre for Public History (ACPH) is a critical hub for public history in Australia. We provide a hub for history at UTS and through our research and activities, we seek to promote the practice and understanding of public history within academia and the broader community.

    Our activities include maintaining and developing national and international public history networks, co-hosting the History Now seminars, running Masterclasses and conferences, and taking history into broad public audiences. We organise the GLAMSLAM industry event for the cultural sector and in conjunction with 2SER we previously hosted the GLAMcity podcast. We also help produce the History Lab podcast.

    Our research

    Our research program is situated at the intersection of popular, professional and academic histories. It includes collaborative research and commissioned projects that cluster around five research 'nodes':

    ACPH research attracts a wide range of funding, including ARC Future Fellowships, ARC Discovery, the Libraries Association of Australia and the NSW Heritage Office. The Centre is also the home of the refereed electronic journal Public History Review and a partner in the landmark Dictionary of Sydney.

  • UTS Research Centre

    Through discovery and applied research, the Australian Institute for Microbiology and Infection (AIMI) seeks to build a better understanding of how microbes grow, live, adapt and survive in all environments and as part of complex, interconnected systems. Developing a better understanding of infectious diseases in humans, animals and the environment.

    We are uniquely focused on deciphering interlinked human, animal, plant and environmental problems in microbiology, infection and disease. Our research spans antibiotic resistance, food safety, computational biology, genomics and proteomics, microbial ecology and microbial morphology.

    Our mission is to use pioneering science to reduce the morbidity and mortality caused by infectious diseases.AIMI brings together an international group of globally prominent scientists and early career researchers from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds.

    Located in Sydney, AIMI is the only research institute of its kind in Australia, and, as part of the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), places our researchers at the forefront of translational science with opportunities to develop and apply cutting-edge technologies to improve global health.

  • UTS Research Centre

    The team at the Australian Stuttering Research Centre conducts world-class research and provides specialist treatment services. They are a unique organisation where speech pathologists and clinical psychologists work together to improve the health and quality of life of those who stutter, and their families, globally. They conduct research to help understand the nature of stuttering and to develop new treatments for it.

    Their most exciting research venture, with multi-million dollar funding from the Australian Government, is to establish the world’s first internet-based stuttering clinic. This development is intended to allow children and adults anywhere in the world, who have internet access, to receive effective treatment for stuttering without cost and without having to see a speech pathologist or a clinical psychologist.

    In addition to their cutting-edge research, they provide clinical services to those who stutter and offer workforce training to speech pathologists in Australia and internationally. 

    Research training is essential to the future of treatment and research for the disorder of stuttering, and they are proud of their postgraduate research training degrees. They have graduates throughout Australia and around the world who have received their doctorates as students with them. Their research training environment for such students is a dynamic and diverse learning experience, covering areas of speech pathology, clinical psychology, linguistics, education, epidemiology, biostatistics, medical imaging, information technology, and qualitative research methods.

    The Centre for Clean Energy Technology focuses on the development of efficient devices for energy harvesting, storage, and conversion. Taking a rational approach, we combine first principles calculation and modelling, novel materials architecture design and synthesis, and system integration in our teaching and research practice. We adapt our research activities to the global low-carbon energy context and aim to achieve innovations and breakthroughs in zero-emission energies.

    We contribute to the UTS vision: to be a world-leading University of Technology through developing cutting-edge renewable energy technologies for a green future, through educating and training a new generation of engineers and scientists, through partnering with industries, through world-wide collaborations, and through engaging with general communities.

    In the Centre for Forensic Science (CFS), we share the vision that crime reduction, crime solving and national security in general are important for society and that there are great benefits for Australia in modern and validated scientific techniques, processes and policies for the prevention and investigation of crime and terrorism.

     

    We have established and maintained a high profile both nationally and internationally, and are recognised as the premier academic institution offering forensic science activities in Australia through both the quality of our teaching programs and the depth and breadth of forensic-related research that undertake.

     

    We train, educate and research at the intersection of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), information technology (IT), law and social sciences to address questions that are fundamental to the concept of national security and public safety, including: intelligence, law enforcement and justice, technology, mobility and transnational crime including terrorism and trafficking are challenging many aspects of society and have impacts on security, economy and policy. We aim to contribute to addressing this global challenge by fostering new ways of thinking that underpin knowledge, discovery and innovation.

     

    By applying forensic science as the holistic study of traces (remnants of activity and/or presence), we can understand - and then impact on - crime and security at large.

    Part of the solution to this energy crisis is the rapid adoption of green technology whether it be for transport, environmental remediation or energy production.

    The Centre for Green Technology was established to develop novel technologies for future clean fuels, vehicle emissions measurement, and environmental decontamination.

    The Centre for Health Economics Research and Evaluation (CHERE) is a national and international leader in health economics, health services and health policy research. CHERE was established in 1991 and has a long established reputation for excellence in research with impact, policy engagement and capacity building in health economics. CHERE is a Centre within the Faculty of Health at UTS. 

    CHERE’s research aims to enhance performance and to improve health outcomes and value for money within the health system. The Centre has extensive experience in evaluating health services, programs and technologies, in analysing the drivers of health system behaviour and performance, and in assessing the effectiveness of policy initiatives. CHERE’s research draws on the Centre’s expertise in the development of cutting edge methods in health economics, health econometrics, economic evaluation, health technology assessment and discrete choice experiments.

    The Centre for Media Transition (CMT) is an applied research unit. Launched in 2017, the CMT is an interdisciplinary initiative of the Faculty of Design and Society and the Faculty of Law. It sits at the intersection of media, journalism, technology, ethics, regulation adaptation, and business.


    The CMT works across disciplines to explore and develop responses to the dramatic and ongoing movements wrought by digital disruption to the media industry, the role of journalism in Australian democracy and the world more widely, and the business models that support a diverse and prosperous industry.

     

    The Centre's published works include reports on Gen AI and Journalism, regional news media, digital platform regulation, and regulatory frameworks and business models to sustain public interest journalism.

     

    The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) Sydney Office is also based within the Centre for Media Transition.
