TEACHING AND SUPERVISION

I actively research in the area of History Education, so have a long-standing scholarly interest in teaching. I'm also an enthusiastic teacher who whole-heartedly takes on opportunities for classroom learning, specialising in teaching areas such as: Australian history, Cultural history, Public History, History Education and Memory Studies.

I'm committed to sharing knowledge and skills in the classroom and beyond. I foster an inclusive, respectful, yet critical learning environment, because I want learners of all levels to think about and interrogate the world around them. I fundamentally enjoy facilitating, and seeing, people’s development in historical thinking. I believe in the value of imparting historical knowledge, and I recognise the importance of learning historical skills for building a critical citizenship in contemporary Australia and beyond—skills such as negotiating different perspectives, conducting independent research, critically analysing sources, understanding evidence, developing empathy (including an awareness of the difficulty of moral judgement across time and culture), and fostering creative pedagogies for history teachers.

Supervision is also one of my most cherished roles in academia, and one I take very seriously. I guide and assist students develop their projects, research content and methodology, and find their ‘voice’.

I completed a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education at Monash University and have undertaken two supervision training courses (at Monash and UTS) that included supervision mentoring with an experienced supervisor as well as extensive seminars on supervision practice, writing, thesis completion and student diversity.
