IMPACT SUMMARY
Key Achievements
- Marie Curie Transfer of Knowledge Fellowships: Beneficiary of two fellowships at Tyndall National Institute, Cork, Ireland (2006-2008) and Biomolecular Photonics Group, University Hospital Jena, Germany (2008-2010).
- Discovery of Biogenic Magnetite: Identified natural superparamagnetic nanoparticles in C. elegans, contributing to the understanding of magnetoception (Proc. Royal Soc. B: Biological Sciences, 2004).
- Mechanosensitive Ion Channels Research: Discovered that MscL and MscS ion channels cluster together in membranes, with their functions influenced by their lipid environment and proximity (PNAS, 2012).
- Development of Nonlinear Endoscope: Assisted in developing the first nonlinear (multiphoton & SHG) endoscope and produced the first 3D images in mammalian tissue in vitro (Optics Express, 2006; J. Biomed Optics, 2007).
- Innovative Biosensors: Invented a phospholipase A sensor for detecting inflammatory bowel diseases (ACS Biomaterials Science & Engineering, 2020) and a lipase activity sensor (ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 2023).
- Leadership and Contributions: Director of HDR Programs Faculty of Science 2020-2024, Deputy Discipline Leader (Biology and Biotechnology Discipline) 2018-2021, Team Leader (Molecular Bioscience) 2015 – 2017.
- Head of the Membrane Biophysics Group and participating in projects with over $15 million in research income.
