Q: Title A: Pharmacy and Nursing Students Working Collaboratively in Hospital Simulated Learning Spaces- An Interprofessional Approach to Learning Q: What's the rationale for this learning experience? (max 250 words) A: Interprofessional communication and collaboration is fundamental to patient safety. However, opportunities for healthcare students to develop the requisite teamwork skills can be limited. This project addresses the imperative for interprofessional education through an innovative simulation experience, utilising the UTS unique learning spaces incorporating an authentic case study using manikins in a simulated hospital environment. The aims of this pilot project are to: (i) enhance pharmacy and nursing students’ understanding of the roles and responsibilities of professions in the healthcare team; (ii) develop students’ interprofessional teamwork and communication skills; and (iii) develop students’ clinical decision making skills. The project will be evaluated using a mixed methods approach. Quantitative data will be collected via pre-and post-test student satisfaction surveys and qualitative data will be collected via focus groups interviews, which will be transcribed verbatim. Future opportunities to include other healthcare students, such as medical, clinical psychology, physiotherapy and other allied health students, will continue to build on this initiative. Q: What kind of class will students be in for this experience? A: studio/lab/prac Q: Please describe the learning experience. What will students learn. What will they do to learn? How will they collaborate? (250 words) A: This is a new initiative to introduce a new interprofessional module into the 96025 curriculum involving postgrad nurses and Masters of Pharmacy students in the simulation labs. This project will highlight the importance of collaborative decision making between health professionals. A case is currently being written by myself, Dr Cherie Lucas and Dr Caleb Ferguson (Health). I am collaborating with Health and have organised the sim room and design of the activity. I am hoping to involve nursing and pharmacy students for this project and in future add physios and other allied health students to the mix. This is a true interprofessional education module and hands on with the manikins etc. This module aims to enhance the respect for different roles and responsibilities of health professionals and the collaborative decision making required for better health outcomes. Q: How will this experience be connected with the rest of the subject? (100 words) A: The subject is called Virtual Hospital Placement and this fits right in with the real life scenario of a hospital case and collaborating with other health professionals, carers, etc Q: What will you use the funding for? (250 words) A: Nursing sprouts and a research assistant. I have submitted the abstract for the idea to present at the T and L Forum on 17th Nov. Happy to pitch it earlier if required, but in need of funding to roll out this curriculum initiative and research project this Dec. We are hoping to submit a paper around this in a journal for interprofessional education/care. Q: What funding are you requesting (total $)? A: probably need $4000 but would settle with the $2000 grant Q: When would you prefer to pitch your idea to a group? A: Early Nov
