BIO

Dr Zhiguang (Galaxy) Qiu is an environmental microbiologist at UTS. He investigates how microorganisms adapt to environmental stress and how their functions can be harnessed for environmental health and biotechnology. His research combines field ecology, microbial cultivation and multi-omics across saline lakes, marine environments, soils, plants and engineered water systems.

Galaxy established a research program spanning 107 saline lakes in China and 15 in Australia, creating extensive genomic resources and a collection of more than 2,500 microbial isolates. He also develop bioinformatic tool that improves the recovery of microbial genomes from complex metagenomic data. His current research explores microbial solutions for nitrogen removal, contaminant biodegradation, water safety and reduced nitrous oxide emissions.

Most of Galaxy's publications fall in top 10% journals, including his first-author research in Nature Communications, Environmental Science and Ecotechnology, and npj Biofilms and Microbiomes. He leads two major projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

He aims to transform microbial discoveries from Australia’s distinctive environments into practical benefits for water, agriculture, public health and ecosystem resilience.
