BIO
Dr Germana Eckert is a lecturer, researcher, and educator whose work is driven by a commitment to educational equity, social justice, and the recognition of learners’ diverse strengths and resources. Her research and teaching focus on asset-based approaches in educational settings, examining how educators can build on students’ linguistic, cultural, and experiential knowledge to support meaningful learning and positive identity development. She has particular expertise in the relationship between educational policy and classroom practice, exploring how policy frameworks shape opportunities for teachers to foster inclusive, responsive, and effective learning environments.
Germana’s research interests span language and literacy education, TESOL, multilingualism, teacher identity, and equity in education. Through her research, she investigates how educational institutions can better support learners’ content knowledge, academic skills, language development, and sense of belonging, particularly for students from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds. Her work seeks to bridge the gap between policy and practice, generating insights that assist educators, schools, and systems to create learning environments in which all students can thrive.
As a teacher educator, Germana is passionate about preparing future teachers to adopt reflective, evidence-informed, and inclusive approaches to their professional practice. She works closely with pre-service and practising teachers to develop their understanding of how learners’ existing knowledge, languages, cultures, and experiences can be leveraged as valuable assets in the classroom. Her teaching encourages critical engagement with contemporary educational issues and supports educators to respond effectively to the needs of increasingly diverse learner populations.
Beyond her research and teaching, Germana is actively involved in initiatives that promote participation, access, and success in higher education. This commitment is reflected in her involvement with the UTS U@Uni Winter School program, which provides Sydney high school students with the opportunity to experience university learning firsthand. Through this program, she supports students in developing a deeper understanding of tertiary education and empowers them to make informed decisions about their future study and career pathways. Her contribution to such initiatives reflects a broader commitment to widening participation and creating educational opportunities for learners from all backgrounds.
Through her research, teaching, and community engagement, Germana seeks to advance educational practices and policies that recognise diversity as a strength and create pathways for all learners to develop the knowledge, skills, confidence, and identities needed to succeed in education and beyond.
