Dr Kaveh Khalilpour joined the Faculty of Engineering and IT as an Associate Professor in 2019. He is an interdisciplinary complex systems engineering academic focusing on the intersection of sustainability and socio-technical networks. His research interests lie in the application of operations research (OR), AI, and data science in searching for innovative approaches to address sustainable development goals, particularly those related to the energy-water-food-justice nexus.

A/Prof Khalilpour is a leadership team member of the UTS Hydrogen Energy Program and a core member of the UTS Visualisation Institute and the Centre for Green Technology (CGT). Through these platforms, he spearheads research in NetworX Analytics, focusing on the resilience and adaptability of critical infrastructure and supply chain networks, leveraging complex systems theories and digital twin technologies to examine their dynamic behaviours, evolution, and response to disruptions.

Since 2020, he has been on Elsevier/Stanford's 2% Scientists list (0.5% in the Energy field). His published works are majorly related to new product/network/market design and span from carbon capture technology and energy load forecasting, to lifecycle analysis of new products, to examining the techno-economic feasibility of leaving the grid and turning to renewable energy storage systems, with a growing emphasis on issues of justice and equity in energy transitions.

A/Prof Khalilpour is a recognised academic in the fields of community energy, energy democracy and just transitions. His work focuses on community-led energy initiatives, participatory governance and equitable pathways to a sustainable energy future. He is the founder of the ComErgy Network and the Community Energy Futures Conference series, initiatives dedicated to advancing energy democracy, bottom-up development and community-driven approaches to a just and equitable energy transition.

Before joining the Faculty of Engineering and IT, Kaveh worked in a number of schools at various Australian and overseas universities, including Data Science and AI, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Physics, Petroleum Engineering, and Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering.

Prior to pursuing an academic career, Kaveh worked for government and industry, tackling the emerging policy and technical issues in the oil, gas and biotechnology sectors. This diverse career background has shaped his research and teaching philosophy at the nexus of social and academic idealism and industrial realism.
