FUNDED RESEARCH
My research has addressed the challenges of Indigenous nation (re)building in sectors such as environmental management (with a Murray-Darling Basin focus), cultural heritage management, repatriation, economic development and governance. In 2015 I was a research leader in the Ngarrindjeri team that won the Australian Riverprize for best practice in integrated river management (River Murray). Acting as a researcher leader supporting the Ngarrindjeri Regional Authority (NRA) Yarluwar-Ruwe team we led the design of the engagement strategy that brought together the South Australian Government, industry groups, community groups, scientists and the Ngarrindjeri nation in a coordinated response to the Millennium Drought (Kungun Ngarrindjeri Yunnan Agreement Strategy).
In recent years my research and community engagement projects have attempted to support First Nations in bringing their laws and knowledges into just relationships with environmental science, the human sciences, NRM and non-Indigenous governments. This work has been translated into complex project development, government policy changes, publications and public presentations. My work is regional, national and international. Recent research partners include: SA Department of Environment and Water; SA Environmental Protection Authority; the Goyder Insitutute for Water Research; SA Natural Resources Management Boards; Ngarrindjeri Nation; Gunditjmara Nation; Nyoongar Nation; Kimberley and Torres Strait Islander peak Indigenous bodies; National Museum of Australia; Australian Institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies; Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa; and multiple Australian and international universities.
